Lois R. Smith's Obituary
SMITH, Lois Regina Jackson 89, of St. Petersburg, passed away at her home on Nov. 6, 2013. Born in Niagara Falls, NY on Oct. 10, 1924 to Mary Matilda Bridget and Richard Joseph Jackson. She was the youngest of 13 children. She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Edwin L. Smith. They met at the Bell Aircraft Center in Niagara Falls during WWII. She was working on the civilian support team and he was a member of the 9th USAAF’s 33rd Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron. After the war, they moved to Memphis, TN to raise their family. Lois loved singing, playing the organ, reading and writing poetry. She will always be remembered for her beautiful soprano voice. In Memphis, she joined the Catholic Resurrection Church and was an active member of the altar guild and choir. After her husband died, she moved to St. Petersburg. She was a volunteer at many of the festivals downtown as well as the Palladium. The Sunshine Center became her new center of activity. She made many new friends and loved singing in the chorus and performing weekly in the Country Classics. Lois lost her battle with cancer after four years but never lost her “positive attitude.” She leaves four daughters, Ellen Reynolds of Memphis, TN, Sandra Smith of St. Petersburg, Gayle Kren of New Market, TN and Judy Guthridge of Telluride, CO; six grandchildren: David Reynolds, Tina Gentry, Sean Reynolds, Kim McCoy, Jason Morris, Jeremy Morris and six great-grandchildren.
