Lillian Magill Cosby Gholson's Obituary
Lillian Rachel Magill Gholson (1915-2018)Lillian Rachel Magill Gholson was born on August 14, 1915 in Georgetown Texas, where her father was the City Marshall. Lillian grew up in Williamson County Texas and served as Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Georgetown before marrying her sweetheart, Howard Gholson. Howard and Lillian were living in Floresville, Texas when she gave birth to their son Charles Gholson. She moved with Howard and Charles to San Antonio where she was a Girl Scout Leader. Later, the family moved to Wake Village, Texas where she served the city as an administrator.In 1956 the family moved to the Highland Heights area of Memphis, Tennessee. Lillian opened the new Randolph Branch of the Memphis Public Library in January 1957 and served as Director until she retired in 1973. Lillian has been involved in the Memphis community for many years, including the Treadwell High School PTA, Altrusa Club and the Friends of the Library.Lillian was a proud member of: The National Society Magna Charta Dames, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Order of the Crown, Plantagenet Society, Americans of Royal Descent, Order of Washington, Daughters of the Republic of Texas and AARP.She is survived by Granddaughter (Martha) Rachel Gholson, Grandsons (Charles) Wayne Gholson Jr. and Les Gholson, Great Grandchildren (Charles III) Chipper Gholson, Christian Gholson, Sophia Gholson and Dominic Gholson, in addition to many close friends. Family and friends know that she readily shared with all her secret to a long life. She loved to tell everyone that the secret was going to bed with three men every night. Arthur-itis, Ben Gay and Jack Daniels. Of course, her favorite was Jack. Cheers!Visitation will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Memphis from 4-7pm on Thursday October 18. Graveside service will be at 1pm on Friday October 19 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Texarkana, Texas. In lieu of Flowers please make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or a charity of your choice.
