Leonard A. Groom's Obituary
Leonard Andrew Groom, Jr., of Collierville, Tennessee, passed into the arms of Jesus on Monday, November 15, 2021. He was born on April 10, 1932, the eldest child of Leonard, Sr., and Mae Groom of Huntingdon, Tennessee.
Leonard graduated from Huntingdon High School in May 1950 and attended Business College in Jackson, Tennessee, before serving in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was Honorably Discharged on October 12, 1954. Leonard was employed as a Supervisor by the Memphis Area Transit Authority for 36 years until his retirement. His retirement activities included woodworking and charter bus driving for the Memphis State Tigers and Memphis Grizzlies basketball teams and his church.
He was ordained a deacon at Park Avenue Baptist Church and continued to serve in that capacity at Ridgeway Baptist Church and then First Baptist Church in Collierville.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his younger brother Jimmy Groom, and his beloved first granddaughter Rhonda. He is survived by his wife Opal Joyce Kennon Groom, his daughters Valdia McAdoo Tribble of White House, Tennessee, Cynthia Kay Ott of Collierville, Phyllis Ann Groom Armstrong (Tommy) of Collierville, his son Phillip Andrew Kennon Groom (Katherine) of Bartlett, and his younger sister Evelyn Turner of Jackson, Tennessee. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Leonard’s memorial service will be held at 10am Monday, November 22nd at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. Visitation is at 9am with interment at Memorial Park to follow immediately after the memorial service.
