Lenore Binswanger's Obituary
Lenore Binswanger, 90, died January 14th after a life fully lived. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she attended Northwestern University where she developed a life-long love for theater and for Mickey Binswanger, her husband of 49 years, whom she met while visiting a Memphis classmate. Upon their marriage she moved to Memphis and embraced her new home. She became a tireless advocate and volunteer for many civic and cultural non-profit organizations. She served most recently on the boards of WKNO and the UT Chancellors Round Table. She also served as President of Theater Memphis and continued as an active board member emeritus. Earlier in her life she sat on the boards of United Way, Junior Achievement, the Mental Health Center, Porter-Leath Children’s Center, Memphis Family Services, Temple Israel Sisterhood and the National Council of Jewish Women. She was a past duchess of Memphi and a former member of the Woman’s Exchange. All benefitted from her practical common sense, her good ideas and direct approach, and her tremendous fund raising abilities. She was also a great dispenser of sage fashion advice, film and theatre critiques, restaurant reviews, and bridge table expertise, all of which will be missed deeply by her friends and family. And her family was paramount, loving and close-knit despite geographical distance. She was predeceased by her husband, Mickey, and is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Debbie Binswanger of Memphis, daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Steve Friedman of Denver, daughter and son-in-law Barbara and Jim Charlton of New York City, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Theatre Memphis, WKNO, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Funeral services will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 17th.
