Lee Hughes' Obituary
LEE SMITH HALL HUGHES, 93, passed away May 16, 2011, after a brief illness. She was the youngest child of John A. and Pearl Smith and grew up in Baldwyn, MS. After marrying, she lived in the Canal Zone, South Dakota, and Minnesota before moving to Memphis, where she worked for General Motors until retirement. She was a member of White Station Church of Christ and attended the Chapel Class. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi for over fifty years, where she held every office in the chapter, the Order of the Eastern Star, Normal Chapter, and a volunteer at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ellery A. Hall and second husband, John D. Hughes, brothers, John B. Smith, Taylor Smith and sister, Christine Oakley, and a nephew, John B. Smith, Jr. A kind and loving aunt who was known for her jokes, sense of humor, faith and devotion to her family, she leaves nieces, Betty R. Wallace (Joe), Gladys Slappey (Gordon); nephews, Edward Smith (Shelia) from Muscle Shoals, AL, Howard Smith from Alpharetta, GA, Robert Smith (Peggy) from Roswell, GA, and Taylor Smith (Peggy) from Columbus, MS, and many great-nieces and nephews. She also leaves her daughter-in-love, Iris Cohn (Sandy), and grandchildren-in-love, Michael Castillo (Amber), Robert Castillo, and Peter Castillo, and great-grandchildren-in-love who all called her Nana, and a stepson, John Hughes (Gail) from Woodbury, MN, and step-granddaughter, Jessica. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 19 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, with the funeral to follow at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or White Station Church of Christ.
