Laura Louise Young Cantrell's Obituary
Laura Louise Young Cantrell, of Memphis, retired secretary to the Regional Director of the United States Postal Service, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Foxbridge Assisted Living in Bartlett, TN. She was 96 years old. She was born in Newport, Kentucky, moved to Memphis at age 15 and graduated from Tech High School. She married Ned Carlisle Cantrell in 1938. Together they built their home on land owned by her husband’s family. She lived in that house on Carnes Avenue and enjoyed gardening on the property for 70 years before moving to Foxbridge Assisted Living in 2009. She was a member of First United (now Peace) Lutheran Church since 1929 where she was the church organist and Secretary of the Church Council for many years. She was a member of Professional Secretaries, Inc and received her Certified Professional Secretary designation in 1969. She was the 1975 Business Woman of the Year and the Secretary to the Board of Directors of the Memphis Heart Association for over 15 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ned Cantrell and son John Calvin Cantrell. She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Cantrell Cochran (Dick) and son Charles Carlisle Cantrell of Hodgenville, Kentucky; grandchildren Elizabeth Louise Cochran of Old Tappan, New Jersey, Charles Robert Cochran (Jennifer), and Edward Carlisle Cochran (Kandis) of San Clemente, California. She was also blessed with two step-grandchildren Levi and Luke Stephenson, as well as 9 great- grandchildren and 3 nieces and nephews. She will be remembered for her love of her family, love of animals and her gardens including her World War II Victory garden. Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, December 30 at Memorial Park Funeral Home with the service on Friday at 11:30 a.m. also at Memorial Park Funeral Home.
