Kevin Porter Newman's Obituary
Kevin Porter Newman passed away on December 19, 2023, in Memphis, Tennessee, after a brief illness.
Kevin was born to Gene Porter and Harold Hastings Newman, Jr in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1951. He attended high school in Alexandria, Virginia at Episcopal High School, graduating in 1970. From there, he returned to North Carolina and obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He attended medical school in Lille, France, which he entered after only studying French for six weeks, finishing first in his class.
He received his medical degree from MCP-Hahnemann College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and went on to practice cardiology and internal medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Memphis, Tennessee. Memphis was his home for 35 years, where he loved living overlooking the mighty Mississippi. He also donated his time researching cardiac issues in children at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis. His life was devoted to his patients.
He is survived by his dear friend Carla Owens, brother Harold Hastings Newman III, sister Jean Newman Glock, and her husband Earl F. Glock. He will be missed by his nephews and nieces, Judge and Sophia Glock, Porter and Alexa Glock, Eliza and Phil Gregory, Travis Brady and David Grose, and seven grandnieces and grandnephews.
The burial will be private. Donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.
