As we get older, we develop an appreciation for those who contributed to our early growth and selflessly guided our footsteps toward a smarter path. I worked as a draftsman with Kermit, among other engineers at Dover, in the late ’70’s. I was drawn to his distinct personality and pragmatic style, partially because my father had know him from their time at ASU in Jonesboro, and also because Kermit frequently took time he didn’t have, and patience beyond measure, to ensure that I more broadly understood the work we were doing and why it was important. As I’ve had opportunity to train younger minds, I’ve found myself using that same approach and recognizing where it came from. I wanted his family to know what a fine teacher and mentor he was.
