Katherine Savage's Obituary
Katherine Lois Barlow Savage, 91, died at her Memphis residence Wednesday, September 30, 2009. Born in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, she married Don M. Savage in 1940. They had one son, Ned B. Savage who resides in Memphis.She was a communicant of the Church of the Holy Communion. A graduate of George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University, St. Louis, she was also a member of the National Association of Certified Social Workers and a current member of the Memphis, TN Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers. While a student at the University, she wrote an essay “A Formula for Class Peace in the United States”, and it was chosen as the National Winner by a committee of Professors at Columbia University. She was awarded a Travel Scholarship given by the Student’s International Travel Association. As a recipient she spent the summer of 1937 traveling throughout Europe. During World War II, she served as a Social Worker with the American Red Cross. After the War, she taught Psychology for several years at what is now the University of Arkansas in Little Rock. In the 1950’s she was a member of Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis and served on many committees and taught Sunday School and VBS classes. Also in the 1950’s she was active with the PTA at East High School serving as Secretary-Treasurer, and served as Den Mother for several years with the Cub Scouts at St. John’s Episcopal Church. She was a past President of Laurelwood Garden Club. She was one of the organizers of the Listeners Book Club in 1957, and served as President in 1982. She was Past Regent of the Watauga Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Shelby County Regent Council, and was a past member of the Board of the Mallory Neely House. She was past President of the Dandridge Guild at the Church of the Holy Communion, and was on the Board of the Episcopal Women for several years. She was Past President of the Military Officers Wives Club of Memphis and a member of the Air Force Wives Group.Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at Noon at the Church of the Holy Communion. The family will receive friends in the Parrish Hall at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at West Tennessee Veteran’s Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be sent to The Church of the Holy Communion or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
