Katherine Merlin Minkin's Obituary
KATHERINE MERLIN MINKIN Our world lost a beautiful person on New Years Day. Katherine Merlin Minkin passed away at home with her sons by her side. Kit was born on September 13, 1923 in Nova Scotia and immigrated to the US as a teenager. She obtained her nursing degree at Hopkins University. Kit served as an Army Nurse Anesthetist in WWII and subsequently at Baptist Hospital in Memphis. Kit’s life was dedicated to her family and helping others. Her compassion was felt by all those who knew her at St. Jude. She served as a volunteer for the Ladies of St. Jude since 1987 working tirelessly on galas, golf tournaments, as a historian and greeter. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award at St. Jude. She was a member of the Tiara Tea Society. Kit was a lifelong member of Holy Communion Episcopal Church and helped the Lenten Services at Calgary Episcopal Church for many years. She was chosen as a runner-up for the Shelby County Senior Citizen Award in 1998. Her family remembers fossil collecting, fishing trips and her wonderful cooking. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Irving C Minkin and her son, Steven C. Minkin. She will be missed by her sons, David and Bruce; her grand-children, Erik, Nicole, Alex, Steven, Molly, Patton, and Ross, as well as her daughters-in-law, Mary Ann Minkin and Missy Minkin. The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, with services to follow at 2:30 p.m., all at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The family requests that any donations be made to the Ladies of St. Jude (St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105).
