Katherine Jones' Obituary
Katherine was born in Humboldt, TN at the family home, known as the “Big House”. The middle daughter of three, to Mary Jarrell and William Noble Thweatt. Growing up in Humboldt, she participated in the West Tennessee Strawberry Festival and often joked about being “overlooked” as its Queen. She graduated from Humboldt High School and the University of Tennessee Knoxville, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. There she met her husband Lewis. They married on October 20, 1951, the third Saturday in October, a choice that was often questioned by the Tennessee football fans involved in the affair. She received her Masters in Education from Memphis State University. She is preceded in death by both of her parents, her loving husband, and her older sister Mary Jarrell Moore. She is survived by her son, Lewis Allen Jones, Jr. and his wife Grace Leatherman, her grandchildren Lewis and Mary Connor Jones, who enjoyed spending many an hour under the watchful eye of their teacher grandmother, her step-granddaughter Elle Leatherman, her sister Sadie Thweatt Duffey, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins with whom she continually enjoyed a loving relationship. The family is very grateful for the time we had with “Granny Kate” and would like to thank her caregivers, Barbara, Carolyn, Evelyn, Irma, and Birder. Visitation will begin at 2:30pm on Friday, April 23 with a memorial service to immediately follow at 4:00pm. Both will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to be sent to: The Arthritis Foundation, 5352 Estate Office Park Dr., Memphis, TN 38119. Their phone number is (901) 685-9060.
