Katherine McKay Hutton's Obituary
After a prolonged battle with Multiple System Atrophy, Katherine McKay Hutton passed away at her home in Memphis with family by her side on Saturday, March 25, 2023, the three year anniversary of the death of her sister, Martha Carter McKay. Born October 18th, 1954 at Horseshoe Lake in Arkansas, Katherine was the second daughter of three to David Carter McKay and Sara Day Snowden McKay. Raised in San Fransisco, with a rich family history in Memphis, the blend of the two made for a wonderfully dynamic impression upon those acquainted with her. She ultimately returned to her roots and finished her degree at the University of Memphis. With a passion for adventure she became a travel agent for Memphis Travel in 1979 right before she met and fell deeply in love with her husband, Tom Hutton, and created a beautiful life together. An avid golfer and fierce competitor, Katie was a 10 time champion and 5 time runner up at the Memphis Country Club, MAWGA champion and Interclub champion. Her physical talents extended to triathlons, skiing, fishing, yoga, and anything fitness related. A child at heart, she thought most rules were meant to be broken. She enjoyed robust political debate, and was an accomplished cook. But of all her accomplishments, none was more important than that of mom. She loved her girls more than anything and taught them how to be strong in the face of adversity. She was persistent and tenacious in all of her pursuits. Katie was predeceased by her father David Carter McKay, her mother, Sally Snowden McKay and her sister Martha Carter McKay. Katie leaves her husband Thomas Hays Hutton, Jr.; two daughters, Sara Hutton Haims (Adam) and Elizabeth Hutton Ricks (Carter); two step-children, Hays Hutton (Laura) and Margaret Hutton Shirley (Scott); sister, Grace McKay, 6 grandchildren and numerous friends and loved ones. A visitation will be held at Trezevant Hall at Grace-St. Luke’s, Thursday March 30 at 10 am with a memorial service to follow at 11am. Her ashes will be interred in a private ceremony. Memorials may be sent to MIFA (Metropolitan Inter-Faith Association).
