Justine Higgins' Obituary
Justine Lowery Higgins, age 93, of Memphis, TN went home to be with her Lord May 13, 2018 after an extended illness. Mrs. Higgins was born in 1924 to a farming family in Mississippi including 9 siblings where she early on developed a great love of gardening that followed her throughout her whole life. She was a standout student and high school basketball star before she moved to Memphis to work at the Army Depot during WWII. In 1946 she married her husband of 57 years, W.T. Higgins, who preceded her in death in 2003. Together they raised 5 daughters, with sacrificial devotion toward the youngest who sadly passed away in childhood of complications from special needs. Inspired by her daughter’s disabilities, Justine entered nursing school soon after and found her calling caring for special needs children at Arlington Developmental Center for many years. She was a faithful member of Audubon Park Baptist Church her entire life serving there in many capacities. She was known to be a gifted artist with a particular talent for portraiture, embroidering, and quilting. She was a wonderful writer and creative storyteller, always entertaining her family and friends. Mostly she was known as a loving mother and “Nanny” to her grandchildren, and as a faithful servant of the Lord. She is survived by her four daughters and sons-in-law, Ken and Linda Jones of Maine, Don and Brenda Harris, Dr. Kit and Diane Mays and Dr. Van and Patsy Rushing all of Memphis, as well as, a sister, Marie Davis of Illinois, 13 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. A committal service will be held Friday, May 18 at 3pm in the Fireside Chapel at Memorial Park Funeral Home in Memphis. Family requests any memorials be sent to Madonna Learning Center 7007 Poplar Avenue Germantown, TN 38138.
