He graduated high school and enlisted in the Army medical corps, received an honorable discharge and went on to study Medicine at U.T. Memphis. While completing his medical study and residency he met his wife Patty (Lourene). He and Patty enjoyed 35 years together, before she passed on in Dec 2003. They enjoyed a fabulous partnership, he loved to work hard and she loved to travel and indulge in art & hobbies. Patients all over Memphis, knew Dr. Fleming, having privileges at the old St. Joseph Hospital and the new St Francis. The bulk of his almost four decades in private practice was performed out of his East Memphis office on Oakhaven. Before he retired his license he was awarded a 50 year service award from U.T. He was well known for his vast collection of Colloquial phrases, with which he peppered conversation, to his friends these become know as “Chief-isms”. Being farm raised, he loved the land and the outdoors. His hobbies were his Fayette Co. farm, Pool, Poker and Bird Hunting. Since his retirement in 2008 he had enjoyed the daily fellowship of his many friends at Caritas Village, where he was affectionately called “Chief”. The daring neighborhood team, the frisky children and plethora of patrons of Caritas Village were enriched by Chief’s humor, hankering for a hand of Rummy and hearty jokes. It was in this setting that his gruff but gentle exterior dissolved into the beloved person now missed, who is on his way to the Lord. Residing at the Caritas Community House, Chief greeted visitors with his own style of hospitality. He was beloved. He is survived by his niece Peggy Drane, nephews David Fleming Jr, and Daniel Fleming, and loving care givers, Onie Johns, JoAnn, Shonnie and Zxsherrie Akins, attended to his needs around the clock.
