Joseph Russell “Rusty” McKinney, 26, lost his life in the line of duty on April 12, 2024. His unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the community will forever be remembered.
Joseph was not only a devoted officer but also an Eagle Scout—a testament to his strong character and leadership. He embodied the values of honor, loyalty, and courage, both in his professional and personal life.
From a young age, Joseph harbored a deep desire to serve as a police officer. His unwavering commitment to this calling led him to join the Memphis Police Department in 2020. Throughout his career, Joseph exemplified courage, dedication, and a sense of duty. His legacy will forever resonate in the hearts of those he protected and served.
Joseph had a zest for life. He loved to travel, exploring new places. His passion for music led him to countless concerts, where he reveled in the energy of live performances. At home, he channeled his creativity into home improvement projects and cooking, always striving to make his surroundings better for those he loved.
He leaves behind his beloved daughter, Camila McKinney; fiancée, Karina Najera Sanchez; parents Chris and Tina McKinney; brother, David McKinney; and a host of aunts, uncles, extended family and friends.
In this time of grief, Joseph’s memory lives on through the countless lives he touched.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 22nd at Hope Church, 8500 Walnut Grove Rd., Memphis. His funeral service will begin at 1:30 p.m. at Hope Church with interment immediately following at Memorial Park Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis.
