Joseph Stalm Hudson M.D.'s Obituary
JOSEPH STALM HUDSON, M. D.,70, died February 14, 2012 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Greatly dedicated to his practice of neurosurgery, Dr. Hudson was at the same time a tremendously dedicated family man who especially enjoyed hunting, fishing, horse racing, and golfing with his children and grandchildren. Summer vacations spent with all of his family were always a highlight of his life. Dr. Hudson was born December 22, 1941 to the late Dr. Jules Rozier Hudson and Rosa Stalm Hudson. He attended Little Flower School and graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1959. Always knowing he wanted to be a physician, he attended Vanderbilt University and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in December 1964. He completed his internship at the University of Texas, John Sealy Hospital, in Galveston, Texas. After general surgery training in San Francisco, he entered his neurosurgery residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and upon completion of his neurological training, Dr. Hudson was a major in the Air Force and Chief of Neurosurgery at March Air Force Regional Hospital in Riverside, California. He returned to his hometown of Memphis in 1973 and joined the Semmes-Murphey Neurological Clinic where he practiced neurosurgery until 2005 when he was forced to retire due to his illness. While practicing at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Dr. Hudson served as chairman of the Division of Neurosurgery and chairman of the Department of Surgery. He was a member of the American College of Surgeons, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, as well as the Memphis Medical Society. Dr. Hudson was elected into the CBHS Hall of Fame in 1988 and was a member of the East Memphis Rotary Club, the Serra Club, the Mid-South Journal Club, and the Delta Marsh Hunting Club. Dr. Hudson is survived by his loving wife of forty-seven years, Diane Pratt Hudson; daughter, Alicia Hudson Cunningham (Francis); sons Eric E. Hudson (Tricia) and Thomas J. Hudson (Michelle); seven grandchildren – Hudson and Katie Cunningham, Helen, Joseph, and John Hudson, and Stephen and Sophie Hudson; a sister Nell Hudson Fundo; and brothers-in-law George J. Pratt (Anne), Dr. Thomas H. Pratt, and Malcolm E. Pratt (Cynthia). Visitation will be on Friday, February 17, from 4:30 to 7:00 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, with Rosary to follow at 7:00 p.m. A Mass of Celebration of Life will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a private burial.
