Joseph Eugene 'Gene' Helms' Obituary
Joseph Eugene ‘Gene’ Helms, beloved husband, father, military veteran and a member of the Greatest Generation, died on Friday, November 9. He was 93. The son of the late James and Lula Helms, Gene served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was held as a prisoner of war after his plane was shot down over Germany. After the war, Gene came home to Memphis and spent his career as a mechanic, employing the skills he learned during the war. He was a longtime member of Bellevue Baptist Church. Gene leaves his wife of 67 years, Katherine Helms; one son, Don Helms of Memphis, and his wife, Cathy; three grandchildren, Shane Helms, Nick Helms, and Lauren Helms Jones; and seven great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:30 pm until service time at 2:30 pm, Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Memorial Park Funeral. The interment will be private at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home. “Behind the Stone Wall”
