Jon M. Long, Sr.'s Obituary
Jon Merriman Long, Sr. passed away peacefully in the company of his family on Saturday, July 29th, after a long illness. He was born in Forrest City, AR on August 2, 1939 to Clarence Edgar (Happy) and Metha Long, who preceded him death. Jon is survived by his wife Glenda, son Jon M. Long Jr. (Jay), and grandson Jon M. Long III (Trip), whom he adored, as well as a sister, Judy Jennings of Wynne, AR. Jon’s smooth speaking voice and great sense of humor made him a very successful salesman and he spent the majority of his career selling municipal bonds, primarily for Dean Witter. He met the love of his life, Glenda Faye Barnett, at First Tennessee in the late 60’s and they would spend the next 50 years together, raising a son, Jay, along the way. Jon was a devoted husband and father who always made time for his family. Jon enjoyed being outdoors and spent countless hours with Glenda working in their yard. He also enjoyed playing golf and, like most guys, loved fast cars. His biggest love, however, was his family, especially his wife, Glenda. He loved “Smiley” deeply and often said that she had truly saved his life in every possible way. There will be a brief committal service in the Rotunda at the mausoleum in Memorial Park Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Avenue in Memphis on Wednesday, August 1st at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
