Capt. John Hipley Wright, MPD, Ret.'s Obituary
John H. Wright, Jr., Capt., MPD, Ret., 91, passed into Eternal Life on March 4, 2021, at his home, after a long battle with dementia.
A lifelong Memphian, born March 25, 1929. John was preceded in death by his parents, John H. Wright and Edna Morrison Wright, his first wife, Erika G. Wright, two sons, James Michael Wright, Karl Heinz Wright, two sisters, Geraldine W. Gavrock, and Johanna W. Polk.
John's Military service included USMC, early WWII, in the Pacific and later with the U.S. Army, in Europe (Stationed in Germany) during the Korean Conflict. He was a Retired Police Captain, Memphis Police Dept., long service as Patrol Officer: Detective in Burglary Squad; Police Academy, and Manager of Administrative Services at the time of his Retirement January 1979. John was the first member of the MPD to earn a college degree, by taking advantage of the MPD Continuing Education program. He earned M.A. and B.A. Degrees at (then) Memphis State University. He enjoyed reading, collecting stamps, learning other languages, traveled many times over Europe, by car and was an avid collector of German Schlager Music. He was past member of Friendship Force of Memphis, and past Board Member, serving as President of Germania Club of Memphis. He was Catholic by faith.
He is survived by his wife, J. Marguerite Court Wright, son, John R. Wright (Janette), daughter, Janet Wright McCullough (David), daughter-in-law, Nancy B. Wright (Karl-deceased), grandsons, Brian Wright (Amanda) and Hunter Wright, great granddaughters, Erika and Katie Wright.
The family would like to give tribute and thank you to his fateful Caregivers Dorothy Collins and Denise Milam who gave him loving care during this difficult time of his life.
A visitation with family and friends will be Saturday, March 13, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. in the Fireside Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
