John Williams' Obituary
John Williams passed away on September 9, 2024, at the young age of 86.
John was a beloved husband and father. He came to Memphis after graduating from the University of Alabama and opened the Tiger Bookstore in May 1964. Opening the store not only set the foundation for his professional life but also introduced him to the love of his life. As fate would have it, he met his wife Shirley when she started working for him in August 1964. They were engaged in December 1964 and married the next June. They worked together for many years and just recently celebrated their 59th anniversary in June 2024.
Even though health pushed John to retire at 52, his life was far from over. He thoroughly enjoyed playing golf, going to the beach with his family, fishing with his son-in-law, and watching his grandchildren grow up. He enjoyed watching the Memphis Tigers play and attended every basketball and football game that he could to cheer them on.
John was one of the humblest people you could have ever met. He had a huge heart for others and was always giving. There were many that looked up to him as a father figure and mentor.
John and Shirley were blessed with three wonderful girls, Kim, Kristy, and Katie, two wonderful sons-in-law, Darren and Kristopher, seven fantastic grandchildren, Andrew (wife Laura), Alex, Christopher, Zachary, Jack, Klyde, and Klara, and finally three great-grandchildren, Mia, Alivia, and Grady.
His legacy of love and generosity will be carried on with his family and friends.
If felt inclined, he was an advocate for the Wounded Warriors Project.
He will be honored at an intimate family ceremony followed by a Celebration of Life at a future date.
Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave, Memphis, TN, 38119. (901) 767-8930.
