John Anthony “Tony” Barnes, age 49, died unexpectedly at his home in Memphis on Monday, April 7, 2014.A native of Memphis, Tony attended St. Louis Catholic School in Memphis, later moving with family to Houston, Texas where he graduated from Stratford High School. Tony was a talented and avid cook and worked in the restaurant business as a chef and waiter. He returned to Memphis in 1998 and over the years worked at Buckley’s, Brushmark, Café 1912, La Tourelle, Café Society, and most recently was a chef for Neil’s Grille and Bar.He leaves his mother, Margaret Byrd Barnes, Houston TX, two sisters, Lyle Barnes Montgomery, Gautier MS, and Margaret Elise Barnes, Mobile AL, a brother, Roy James Barnes, Jr., Memphis, his step-mother, Judith Rankin Barnes, Point Clear AL, two step- sisters, Nelle Harris Van Brocklin, Memphis, Jennifer Harris Hester, Gilbert AZ, a step-brother, Andrew Patterson Harris, Memphis, and his devoted friend, Diane Thornburg, Memphis. He also leaves six nephews and nieces: Michael Montgomery, Houston TX, Kathryn Montgomery, Stanford CA, Sam Barnes, Memphis, Kate Caywood, Nashville, Sarah Hester, Gilbert AZ, Lily Van Brocklin, Memphis, and two great-nieces, Sadie and Grace Montgomery, Houston TX. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. Roy James Barnes who died January 30, 2014.Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 pm on Tuesday, April 15 at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Poplar. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Louis Catholic Church on Wednesday, April 16 at 10 am with reception to follow at the church.
