John W Thorpe Jr.'s Obituary
John William Thorpe Jr peacefully passed away on July 9, 2026, in Collierville, TN. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
He was born in Memphis, TN to Lucille Adams Thorpe and John William Thorpe, Sr on August 28,1946 and grew up in Somerville, TN. In 1972 he married Doris Thorpe and they had a wonderful life together and raised one daughter.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in History and Geology from the University of Tennessee, a Master of Education degree from Georgia Southern University, and a Master of Business Administration (Telecommunications Management) from the New York Institute of Technology. During his career he was actively involved in numerous organizations and won many awards. He retired as a Signal Corps Colonel in the US Army Reserve.
John was an avid tennis player, golfer, scuba diver and enjoyed woodcrafts and amateur radio.
He will be remembered for his love of his country, dedication to hard work and willingness to lend a helping hand to others.
He leaves behind his wife of 54 years, Doris, and his daughter, Melissa Sherwood, and granddaughter, Savannah Sherwood.
Visitation for John will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home-Fireside Chapel on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM with burial to follow immediately after.
