Dr. John Joseph Reid's Obituary
Dr. John Joseph Reid, 79, of Collierville, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2011 after an illness. Dr. Reid was a professor of economics at the University of Memphis from 1966 until his retirement in 2004. He received his b.a. in economics from the University of Connecticut, his masters from the University of New York, and his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. While attending the University of Virginia, Dr. Reid studied under several Nobel Prize winning economists. Prior to coming to Memphis, he was a professor at the Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. Dr. Reid also worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as an economic advisor. He was the Assistant Dean at Fogelman College of Business & Economics from 1980-1986. He was instrumental in the development of the Executive MBA Program at the University of Memphis and served as the International Business Advisor there. Dr. Reid also authored many papers on economic policies. He is preceded in death by his wife Irene Maurath Reid, his parents John Joseph Reid and Elizabeth Tuttle Reid of Norwalk, CT, and his aunt May Hagadorn of Eastchester, NY. Dr. Reid is survived by his daughter Christina Reid Douglas, his son-in-law Andrew J. Douglas, and two grandchildren Sophia Irene Douglas and Nicholas John Douglas all of Collierville, TN. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00pm, on Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 11:00am, on Thursday, February 17, 2011, at St. Patrick’s Church where he was a member. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial donations be sent to the St. Patrick’s Learning Center.
