John Evans Petree's Obituary
John Evans Petree passed away peacefully on June 15, 2015, with his family by his side. He was born on January 26, 1948, in St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded by his parents, Phoebe Evans Petree and Jack Petree, his grandparents Marion Griffin Evans and Phoebe Grosvenor Evans and Arthur Willford “Jack” Hovater and Velma Petree Hovater and by his adoptive grandparents Walter Chesley Petree and Elizabeth Foote Petree. His sisters Phoebe Elizabeth Petree and Katherine Petree Chiapella also preceded him in death.John and Nancy Hosman were married in 1969 in Omaha, Nebraska, and were the parents of a son, John Evans Petree, Jr. (Lisa) and two daughters, Kristin Petree Sivils (Scott) and Kari Petree Keuter. He is survived by his seven grandchildren: Ben, Phoebe, and Andrew Sivils: Grace, Jack, and Julia Petree; and Payton Keuter; by his sisters Florence Petree Gosnell of Collierville, Tennessee, and Phoebe Petree Welsh (Tim) of Kirkwood, Missouri; and by his brother-in-law John Chiapella. He had a loving relationship with his mother-and father-in-laws Patsy Lee Hosman of Jefferson, South Dakota, and Dale E. Hosman (deceased).John “Butch” Petree was a graduate of Memphis University School in 1966 where he excelled in both basketball and football. He graduated from Southern Methodist University and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.Butch began his career as a trust officer at Memphis Bank and Trust where he continued until his retirement. After his retirement, he continued to advise friends and family with their investments. He was a member of the Memphis Country Club where he excelled in handball and cards. He epitomized the characteristics of a perfect southern gentleman.The visitation will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home on Monday, June 22, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. He was a long time member of Christ United Methodist Church where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., on Tuesday, June 23. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In Lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in John’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
