John Nickey's Obituary
John Addison Nickey was born in Memphis on Oct. 7, 1947, and passed away on his 70th birthday on October 7, 2017. He was preceded by his parents, Addison Boyd and Virginia Chears Nickey. John graduated from Memphis University School in 1965 and received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt, and his master’s degree from the University of Memphis. John was an outstanding amateur golfer. Under the tutelage of Pat Abbott at Memphis Country Club, John won the men’s club championship three times. He held the competitive amateur course record for many years. He competed on the school team at Memphis University School and was a three time Varsity letterman at Vanderbilt. He competed at numerous state and regional tournaments and qualified for the USGA national amateur championship. John will be remembered for his incredible knowledge of the history of golf.John retired from Memphis City Schools as a Research Evaluator. He is survived by his wife of 35 years Dr. Jeryl McCormick Nickey Ed.D, and step-granddaughter, Savannah Mitchell, brothers- in- law, John McCormick (Johanna), Buss McCormick and Scott McCormick (Carolyn).Please join the family for a Celebration of John’s Life on Thursday, October 12 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.
