John M. "Jack" Hisky's Obituary
John M. “Jack” Hisky, R.Ph. of Memphis, TN passed away peacefully at home on February 11 following a long illness. He was 86. Jack was born in Memphis, Tennessee on May 8, 1926, to James Lawrence and Mildred (Harwell) Hisky, and was the youngest of four children. Jack earned his degree as a Registered Pharmacist at UT School of Pharmacy in Memphis in 1951. During that same year, he married Harriet Jean Duke, from Jonesboro, AR, who graduated from Baptist Nursing School as a registered nurse. Jack began his pharmacy career at The Prescription Shop in the Bellevue/Lamar area working for James Peter “Pete” Sartain. In 1952, he was commissioned for six months to set up the pharmacy department for the new Crittendon Hospital in West Memphis, after which he returned to the Lamar pharmacy. After taking ownership of The Prescription Shop in 1965, Jack relocated the business to the Longview Heights area in South Memphis due to displacement by the interstate. He worked at this location until his retirement in March 2007. Jack was a member of the Memphis Pharmacy Association, Tennessee Pharmacy Association, Knights of Columbus, National Rifle Association, a Lifetime Sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, and a long-time parishioner at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in East Memphis where he volunteered as a greeter. Jack and his wife Jean had been members of Holy Rosary Parish since its inception more than 50 years ago. Jack was an avid fisherman, hunter, and handyman around the house. He will be remembered by his friends and customers as a kind, outgoing man who never met a stranger and made everyone feel welcome in his home or in his store. He will be remembered by his family as an incredible father with a loving heart, a generous spirit, and strong character, as a grandfather and “best friend” who had a witty sense of humor, who tremendously enjoyed family activities and get-togethers, and who loved involving his children grandchildren with him in his outdoor sporting activities. He was an inspiring role model to his family, and instilled in them by his own example an honorable work ethic and many other positive values. He was truly loved, deeply admired, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jack is survived by his wife, Harriett “Jean” (Duke) Hisky; his sister, Shirley (Hisky) Lete of Bartlett, TN; his seven adult children, Linda Marie Hisky Landon (Leon) of Bartlett, TN, Cheryl Jean Hisky Smith (Donnie) of Senatobia, MS, James Lawrence “Larry” Hisky (Alyson) of Lees Summit, MO, Teresa Anne Hisky Bargiacchi (Fred) of Memphis, John “Michael” Hisky (Kathy) of Memphis, Patricia Lynne “Trisha” Hisky Meyer (Chris) of Lakeland, TN, and David Duke Hisky (Claudia) of Austin, TX.
