John Fletcher's Obituary
John Thomas Fletcher, Jr., 87, of Memphis, retired office manager for Concrete Products, Inc., died Wednesday evening at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, TN. He was born on May 12, 1923, in Memphis, TN. As a resident at The Parkview for the last several years, he was especially proud of the fact that he was born the same year that The Parkview was built. Mr. Fletcher was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Fletcher, Sr. and Lillie Joyner Fletcher; and by his sister, Alma Reed Fletcher Perry. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, May 6, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Funeral Home with burial in Memorial Park Cemetery immediately afterward. As a charter member of St. Stephen United Methodist Church, Mr. Fletcher was among the group of men who initially cleared the ground where the church building would be erected. He remained a faithful member of the congregation at St. Stephen for the following six decades, during which he served in a variety of roles for the church. In one of those roles during the 1960s, Mr. Fletcher served as Cubmaster for Cub Scout Pack 200 at St. Stephen, thus continuing his lifelong passion for and commitment to Scouting. He also served as the chartered organization representative for the Scouting programs at St. Stephen as well. Automobiles and driving were also lifelong interests for Mr. Fletcher. During World War II, he served as a driver in the 752nd Transportation Engineers in the European Theater of Operations. Later, he would travel extensively as a sales representative for General Motors Corp. and for American Motors Corp. Mr. Fletcher leaves his wife of 68 years, Marjorie Rimer Fletcher, of Memphis; two daughters, Carol Ann Fletcher McNeel (Tom) of Memphis and Barbara Ree Fletcher Nuckolls of Bolivar, TN; two sons, John Herman Fletcher (Elaine) of Nesbit, MS, and James Albert Fletcher (Sharon) of Cordova, TN; 13 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
