I worked with John for several years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies in North Carolina. John worked hard, had high personal standards and ethics, was frugal, patriotic (U.S. Army veteran), a good citizen, and always encouraged everyone to vote. John was also very kind and had a great sense of humor. He loved practical jokes. John shared a lot of laughs and good times with his coworkers. After John retired, we talked often. John always asked about his friends in North Carolina and was interested in how they were. John was a Christian, and he is in a better place now. I will miss talking with him. He was a good friend. I worked with John doing technical writing for AT&T in NC. There are two memories I have of John. One is if he caught you in some awkward thing, he would remind you of it and get some laughs. One time near his desk, the senior engineer got all upset that I had written some notes on the reverse side of a draft I was writing. The engineer exploded with instructions never to do that again. Shortly after, John came to my desk and talking from his military past, equated it to a bomb going off. He would often get us laughing about that incident. The other memory was when John and I had talked about the Bible’s assurance of salvation in Jesus Christ. He was still uncertain trying to understand how doing good deeds fits in. After taking some reading material and visiting home in Memphis, John told me at work that he had prayed to personally commit his life to Christ and had assurance of salvation. That was back in the 1980s so we can say with certainty that he is in a better place. (Jim Daniels, Winston-Salem, NC)
