John Joseph Connors, Jr.'s Obituary
John Joseph Connors, Jr. died on Friday afternoon, October 29, 2010 at the age of 87 after leaving his Church library. He was walking to his apartment when he had a sudden cardiac arrest. Jack was born April 10, 1923 in Memphis Tennessee, to John Joseph Connors Sr. and Lou Wood. He attended Vanderbilt University after which he joined the Navy and became a captain and pilot of a patrol bomber in the Pacific in WW II. More to his own liking was his love of baseball; he was a pitcher at both Vanderbilt and in the Navy and a coach of a little league baseball team. After his “baseball age”, he became a fanatic golfer, which was actually an excuse to just chat with his friends for 4 hours and then for 2 more on the nineteenth hole. After WW II, he was owner and President of Connors Brokerage Company and grew that into Southern Warehouses where he retired at 72. In later years he became librarian for his beloved Second Presbyterian Church, where he worked happily till the day he died. His warm heart and kind generous nature created close friendships with numerous people whose ages ranged from 30-90 and covered all walks of life. The most rewarding thing to him in life was friendships, not accomplishments. A devoted family man; he is survived by his children, Dr. J. J. (Buddy) Connors, Janet Merle Connors, and Charles Christopher Connors, and his grandson Dillon Drew Connors. Services will be Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Second Presbyterian Church. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. in the Salmon Room with funeral service in the Chapel. Entombment will follow at Memorial Park Mausoleum. Donations can be made to the NeuroVascular Research Foundation, 436 Inspiration Lane, Gaithersburg, MD 20878-5664 (www.strokeregistry.org), a non-profit research foundation for the advancement of the treatment of stroke (a passionate concern of Jack’s in which he became well-versed working with his son.)
