Cochran, John Richard's Obituary
John Richard “Dick” Cochran, Jr., age 83, passed away on August 6, 2025, in Collierville, Tennessee. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many, Dick’s life was marked by service, curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the world around him.
Born on May 18, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland, Dick was raised in Hagerstown where he graduated from North Hagerstown High School. His academic journey continued at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia. There he majored in Economics and became a proud member of the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity—an experience that helped shape his lifelong commitment to leadership and community.
After college, Dick answered the call of duty by enlisting in the United States Army. He completed Basic Training and Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox in Kentucky. It was there that he developed a lasting passion for tanks and proudly served in the Armor Division both stateside and overseas in Korea.
Following his military service, Dick embarked on a successful career in banking. Over the years he held various roles including branch manager, loan officer, mortgage broker, and underwriter. His professional life reflected his dedication to helping others navigate important financial decisions with integrity and care.
Upon retirement, Dick continued to serve his community through volunteer work that combined his love for nature with his generous spirit. He gave his time as a park ranger at Shelby Farms Park and volunteered at the Southern Reins Center for Equine Therapy—roles that brought him great joy and fulfillment.
Dick was also a man of faith. He was an active member of Oakhaven United Methodist Church and later Emmanuel United Methodist Church. His involvement included regular participation in the Men’s Prayer Breakfast and Methodist Men gatherings—communities where he found fellowship and spiritual growth.
At home, Dick found peace and satisfaction in simple pleasures. He enjoyed woodworking projects that showcased his craftsmanship and spent many hours tending to the chickens in his backyard—a quiet hobby that reflected his connection to nature. He was also involved with the Boy Scouts of America by volunteering his time through the Wood Badge program.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Cantrell Cochran; daughter Beth Cochran (Garrett Clapp); sons Robert Cochran (Jennifer Daniel Cochran) and Edward Cochran (Kandis Kimberly); and grandchildren Ben, Dori, Emily, Madison, Christopher, Rachel, and Ella Grace. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents John and Margaret Cochran.
Dick’s life journey was filled with love, service, and a deep appreciation for nature. His memory will live on through those who knew him best—in every act of kindness shared or moment spent outdoors enjoying the beauty he so cherished.
May his memory bring comfort to all who were touched by his presence. A Celebration of Life will be held on August 23, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at The Farms at Bailey Station Events Center 3300 South Houston Levee Road.
