John Thomas Brannen's Obituary
John Thomas Brannen, 88, of Memphis, TN, went home to be with his Lord on November 16, 2017. Born in Statesboro, Georgia on February 18, 1929, John was the youngest child of the late Don and Annie Brannen.John graduated from Statesboro High School in 1946 where he served as Senior Class President. He held degrees from Georgia Southern University and Georgia State University. He served in the Army National Guard during the Korean conflict and attained the rank of master sergeant. He was employed by International Harvester Corporation for 29 years until he retired in 1982. He then worked as the secretary/treasurer of Mid-America International Trucks in Memphis until his retirement in 1998.John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, scout leader, and volunteer. He had a servant’s heart and was a long time, faithful member of Christ United Methodist Church and the Lamplighter Sunday School class. He actively mentored several young men through various programs including Eikon Ministries, the MARRS Ministry, and the Boy Scout program and was a regular volunteer at Bibles for China and Lester Elementary School.John was preceded in death by his brother Bill, sister Helen, sister-in-law Lois and niece Diane Miller.He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Jones Brannen; his children, Jeff Brannen (Caryn) and Kathy Brannen Greer; five grandchildren, Nicholas Greer, Patrick Greer (Tracey), Rebecca Brannen, Rachel Brannen and Gracie Greer; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas and Caroline Greer.Visitation will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 4488 Poplar Avenue, on Monday, November 20 at 1:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2 p.m. in Wilson Chapel.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ United Methodist Church for the Senior Adult Ministry or the Missions Fund.The family is deeply grateful and wishes to express their appreciation for the loving care provided by Regina’s Elderly Homecare, Quail Ridge Alzheimer’s Care Center, and Crossroads Hospice.Arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN 38119 (901) 767-8930. “Celebrating Life… Behind the Stone Wall”.
