John Robert "Bob" Durschlag's Obituary
John Robert “Bob” Durschlag, 96, of Cordova passed away Thursday, November 10, 2011 at Baptist Trinity Hospice House-Collierville. He was born May 3, 1915 in Kirkland, Ohio and was a member of the Boy Scouts of America. Bob was the first Boy Scout in the Willoughby, Ohio area to attain the rank of Silver Palm Eagle. Bob graduated from Ohio State University in 1941 where he was a member of the Alpha Zeta fraternity. Bob was in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II, where he attained the rank of Lt. JG and spent 2 ½ years in the Pacific. After the war he worked for the USDA Soil Conservation Service as a farm planner in Holmes County, Ohio. He started his own home building company in 1951 where he built homes in Ohio and Florida before moving to Memphis in 1957 and met his wife Suzanne Condit. He was a member of the Memphis Home Builders Association and was a member of the SPEBSQS for 32 years. Bob was also a member of the Memphis Chapter and sang with them when they won the International Chorus Championship in 1958. He was honored by the Memphis Home Builders Association by being selected to build their new facility in 1984. He and Sue divided their time between Memphis, Tennessee and Sarasota, Florida from 1985 until 2004. Bob was a member of the Earnest Workers Sunday School Class at Evergreen Presbyterian Church in Memphis. Bob also enjoyed playing golf and bowling. He and Sue traveled to 40 different countries during their 50 years together. Bob is survived by a son, John McNulty of Memphis, Tennessee; daughter, Barbara Van Dyke of Cordova, Tennessee; various grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until service time at 3:00 pm, Saturday, November 12, 2011 at Memorial Park Funeral Home with the interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery.
