John Neil Avis' Obituary
John Neil Avis, longtime Memphis educator, died early Wednesday morning, August 31st, in a car accident. He was 69 years old.
John spent his career investing in the lives of children through teaching, coaching and mentoring. He started his career with Memphis City Schools and served children in urban education for over 30 years. After retiring from Memphis City Schools, he continued his work in the education field by working in the private school sector. John also served in adjunct roles at then Memphis State University, Christian Brothers University and Memphis College of Art.
Outside of his service in education, John was highly involved in the community as a member of Second Baptist Church. He volunteered as a Sunday School teacher and served on numerous church committees. He also served on the Board of Brinkley Heights Urban Academy.
John’s favorite hobbies included: reading, taking long walks and visiting with his neighbors, attending Tiger games, and watching Jeopardy (he knew all the answers!).
John leaves behind his wife, Janet, his three children, Ashli, Jonathan and Christopher and four grandchildren (and 3 adorable dogs!). John loved nothing more than spending time with his family- through family vacations, backyard pool days, and attending sporting events for the Tigers and for the grandchildren. John and Janet had a dedicated love that lasted over 50 years.
John loved others so well. His family is heartbroken over his loss. This immense loss will be felt well beyond his family- as he invested so deeply in so many and in the city of Memphis.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.at Second Baptist Church with service to follow at 12:00 p.m.. A private gravesite will follow. If you are able, the family would love to see you dressed in your finest Tiger blue at the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Second Baptist Church, NEXUS, Make-A-Wish Mid-South or Brinkley Heights Urban Academy.
