John F. Applegate's Obituary
John F. Applegate, 96, passed away February 1, 2016. He was born January 1, 1920, in Rushville, Indiana to Merle and John F. Applegate, Sr. Mr. Applegate served in the U.S. Army 1942-45 during World War II in the China Theater. He married Phyllis Stinehelfer on May 20, 1945, and soon began work for the U.S. Postal Service. In 1953 he was appointed Postal Inspector and then in 1960 appointed to Acting Regional Director (St. Louis, MO) and in 1970, Deputy Regional Director. In 1971 he was promoted to Assistant Regional Postmaster General, Customer Services Southern Region (Memphis, TN). He was promoted Assistant Postmaster General (Washington, DC) in 1975 before retiring in 1978 and returning to Memphis. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Phyllis Applegate. He is survived by his daughters, Cindy Limbaugh (John) and Jenny Herndon; grandchildren, Heather Thornton (Matt), Jonathan Limbaugh (Ashley), Trevor Herndon (Karen), and Melanie Betty (Mark); and great-grandchildren, Sarah Grace Limbaugh, Kathryn Mary Limbaugh, Taylor Hudson Thornton, Chase Ryder Betty. and one more granddaughter due in June. Visitation will be 5:30-7:30 p.m., Friday, February 5 and funeral services will be 11:30 a.m., Saturday, February 6 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.
