Dr. Joel Martin Cook's Obituary
Dr. Joel Martin Cook, beloved podiatrist and lifelong Memphian peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, September 24, 2018.He was one of four children born to Marcus G. and Fanne Padawer Cook, who preceded him in death, along with two brothers Milton Cook(Louisville) and Drew Cook(Memphis). Dr. Cook is survived by Gina Guidi Cook his loving wife and best friend of 35 years and their daughter Chelsea Nicole Cook of Durham, NC; his daughter Dana Cook Bray(David), her mother Becky Cook, and three “grand” girls: Gabby, Maddy, and Sami Bray; his sister Janel Cook Billiot (Joseph) of New Orleans, and brother Ivan Cook of Memphis; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. Joel and Gina could often be spotted cheering for the U of M Tigers, sampling BBQ at Memphis in May, dancing at Central High class reunions, and listening to Blues on Beale Street. His favorite pastimes were were enjoying family and friends at Pickwick Lake, celebrating holidays and special occasions with family, and giving standing ovations following his granddaughters’ performances. Besides his family and friends, Dr. Cook’s true love and devotion rested in his practice and his patients. He was wise, dedicated, kind, and most importantly caring. He remembered not only his patients’ names but also facts about their families. When his 40 year podiatry practice relocated from Elvis Presley Blvd. to East Memphis, his patients continued to follow him. His family wishes to thank the many friends who visited and prayed for Joel during his illness, especially his caretakers Carol Newby and Cousin Lisa Gwyn. Each of you brought him joy!Services for Dr. Joel Cook will be held at Temple Israel Synagogue,1376 E. Massey Rd., beginning on Wednesday,September 26 at 10:00 AM, followed by burial at Memorial Park Cemetery on Poplar Avenue. In respect for Jewish tradition, in lieu of flowers his family requests that donations be made in Dr. Cook’s memory to: Dorothy’s Place, 3185 Hickory Hill Road, Memphis or to MIFA, 910 Vance Avenue, Memphis.
