Jewell Hansbro's Obituary
Jewell Evelyn Hansbro was born December 11, 1922 in Cherokee, AL and died August 6, 2014 in Memphis, TN. She grew up on a farm until she attended The Tennessee School for the Blind in Nashville where she met her husband, John Hansbro, who preceded her in death 30 years ago. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Louise Wiley, and one brother, Raymond “Ted” Sherill. She leaves a daughter, Janet Williford (Steve), a grand daughter, Laura Davidson and a sister, Doris Hagefstration. She was a longtime member of Getwell Church of Christ and Berclair Church of Christ. She was also a charter member and secretary of the Memphis Chapter of the American Council of the Blind which helped foster the idea that it was the right of every blind person to be included in our society. Even though losing her vision at an early age, she never let this affect her outlook on life. She enjoyed entertaining others in her home and worked to help other blind people with many needs. Family will receive friends at Memorial Park Funeral Home from 1:30-3 p.m. with service to follow at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be given to the Baptist Trinity Hospice House or the Memphis Chapter of the American Council of the Blind. Memorial Park Funeral Home, “Behind the stone wall”, 901-767-8930.
