Jessie Lee Burgett's Obituary
Mama. Granny. Sister. Jessie Lee. Beloved Friend. We all knew her by one of these endearing names and always will. She always worried about everyone more than herself. She loved us with everything she had - sometimes, to her own admission, she loved us too much. We knew she was always there for us and always praying for us, even when she needed prayers herself. She loved the Lord with her whole being, and she watched her daily preaching and read the Bible and her books every morning and every night before she went to bed, even if it took her hours to do it because she would keep falling asleep; she couldn’t go to bed without finishing her prayers and reading. She gave to many charities and always paid her tithes; she even wanted to make sure her tithes were paid while she was in the hospital. She would give her last dime to help someone who was hungry or in need.
Jessie Lee was a short woman in stature, but she could fill a whole building with her presence and love and laughter. She was a force to be reckoned with when she believed in something, and no one on earth could make her waiver. She was a spit fire, and even when we disagreed, it was a trait we all admired in her. Her presence will never leave us, and she could certainly never be forgotten. It’s true, there will never be another Jessie Lee.
Granny loved to shop. She would tell the story of her being so sick one time she couldn’t move from the couch, and her husband waved cash in front of her face and said “She’ll be feeling better now”. Granny loved bargains and anything on sale; we joked with her that she would buy absolutely anything that had a red sticker on it. Her favorite store was Habitat, and even her physical therapists knew she would start moving faster if they told her she could go shopping and go to Habitat if she recovered quickly.
Although we can never understand why she could not live forever, we know that she is in Heaven looking down on us and watching over us just like she did on earth, but now she doesn’t have to worry if we don’t answer the phone because she can see everything we do and everywhere we go. She loved with everything she had, and she was loved immensely by everyone who knew her, especially those of us blessed enough to be her family. She was a true one of a kind woman and will live on forever through all the lives she touched while she was here.
