Jesse Franklin Muranyi Ingels' Obituary
Jesse Franklin Muranyi Ingels, born 21Feb1958, died on 27Dec2022 after a prolonged and heroic battle with pancreatic cancer. Diagnosed in April2020, Jesse continued his work at the University of Tennessee, Health Science Center through multiple rounds of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. After a stroke in Aug2022 his activities were necessarily limited but Jesse never gave up hope of improving and returning to work and continued to struggle and strive with his cancer and complications up to and including the day of his death.
Jesse was a brilliant researcher and dedicated his life to the investigation of those pathogens and pathologies that contribute to human suffering with the lofty goal of improving the human condition. Inspired and meticulous, his work products were precise, organized, and invaluable. A talented teacher and mentor, his colleagues often referred to him as “Doctor Jesse”. He was named on countless publications; his contributions noted in a broad range of areas including Infectious diseases, Autoimmune diseases, and Aging.
Jesse was a loyal friend and ally. He loved to fish and watch all things sports on TV, but especially loved football (Go Chiefs!). He lived a purposeful life, never missing a day of work as long as the University was open until illness prevented him, and often driving in through sleet or snow to check on his experiments even when the University was closed.
No formal memorial service is planned. Jesse will be laid to rest at the Memorial Park Funeral Home. Donations in his memory may be made to the Memphis Humane Society or other animal welfare organization of your choosing.
