He enlisted in the US Army and was an Infantry Combat Veteran in the Korean War. He was Honorably Discharged as a Sargent in 1954. He later moved to Memphis to raise his family and became a skilled craftsman in carpentry, enjoying a long career in that field until finally re-retiring at age 80. He thoughtfully made keepsake furniture for his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter that included entertainment centers, built-in cabinetry, end tables, cedar chests, gun cabinets and a toy box. He also made a replica of his childhood plantation home in Aberdeen, Mississippi – from memory – as the house has long been gone. There was always a sweet scent of fresh cut lumber and occasionally a bit of Old Spice when he was nearby. He loved listening to George Jones among other veteran country artists and enjoyed watching The Grand Ole Opry and Larry’s Country Diner. His Southern Baptist roots run deep and he was a dedicated member of Covenant Baptist Church in Collierville, Tennessee and carefully incorporated Gospel programs into his television viewing requirements. Padaddy finally moved to Nashville in his early 80’s to be closer to his family. He was most content with a recliner, a cup of coffee, a remote control, and old westerns on the television. He was a man of habit and would be quick to keep you on his schedule should you stray, especially regarding mealtimes.Services will take place Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Memorial Park Funeral Home 5668 Poplar Ave Memphis, TN in the Fireside Chapel. Visitation will begin at 10:30 am with service following at 11:30.
