Jeff Gates' Obituary
Jeffery Peter Gates, 67, of Memphis, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2025, in his hometown. Born on July 18, 1958, to Nadine and Joseph Granville Gates Jr., Jeff was a beloved husband, father, and friend whose warmth and charisma left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Jeff is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Carol Gates, and their two children, Molly and Perry Gates. His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. He is also survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Melodie Phillips, and their children, Lauren, Meghan, and Dillon; his sister-in-law, Lynn Pfund, and her children, Lee and Allison; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Johnny and Sandy Pfund, and Johnny’s daughter, Lisa; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Donald and Janet Pfund, and Donald’s son, Roy; and his mother-in-law, Jean Kleas. Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Granville and Nadine Gates.
A proud Memphian, Jeff built a successful career beginning at Roadshow BMW, followed by Frank Balton Sign Company. He later purchased and operated H.A. Balton Sign Company, where his talent as an exceptional sign salesman earned him respect and admiration in the industry. Known for his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit, Jeff’s work left a visible mark on the community he loved.
In retirement, Jeff settled in Hot Springs, where he embraced life’s simple pleasures. He was a regular at the horse races, where his enthusiasm and sharp wit made him a favorite among friends. Above all, Jeff treasured time spent on the lake with his family, creating memories filled with laughter and love.
Jeffery’s legacy is one of kindness, humor, and an unwavering commitment to those he held dear. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered in the hearts of his family and friends.
The memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, 2025, with visitation and eulogy at 12:45 PM and the service starting at 1:30 PM at St. Louis Catholic Church.
