Jeanne Settles' Obituary
Mary Jeanne Dobson Settles, passed into eternity on June 9, 2018. A native of Garland, Tennessee, she studied at Lambuth College and transferred to then-Memphis State College in 1947. There she met the love of her life – coach, teacher, and insurance broker Andy Settles, who proceeded her in death in 2001 after 53 years of marriage. Jeanne earned bachelor and master degrees at the University of Memphis and earned credit toward a doctoral degree in library science. A passionate Tiger loyalist, she was an active alumna and was awarded honorary membership in the University of Memphis Emeriti and the Letterman’s Club.Jeanne taught at Treadwell and Stafford elementary schools and was the librarian at Knight Rd. Elementary and Shrine School for the Handicapped. Whether at the cabin she and Andy built on the banks of the Spring River in Hardy, AR, or traveling the world, Jeanne drank deeply of life. Her hobbies of needlework, ceramics, and gardening reflected artistry and fine craftsmanship. Whatever she turned her hand to, only her best was enough. She is listed in Who’s Who in America.Jeanne was preceded in death by her brother Jere Dobson of Garland. She is remembered by her sister Joan Hazlerig (Larry) of Germantown, TN; her beloved sons Eddie (Eve) and Tony Settles of Memphis; grandchildren Garrett Settles of Seattle, Samantha Ley (Jeff), Drew Settles (Danielle), and her fondly “acquired” grandchild Nelson Berry, all of Nashville; and great-grandchildren Summer and Cody Ley of Nashville.
