Jean Thurmond Sibley's Obituary
Jean Thurmond Sibley died November 27, 2022. She grew up in Kosciusko, MS, and graduated from Blue Mountain College in 3 years with a double major, It was there she met her future husband, Robert Thurmond. He was a handsome young returning Air Force officer who attended Blue Mountain summer school while working on his degree at Mississippi State. After their marriage, she moved to Mississippi State where he was a senior. It immediately became "her school. She loved her job there and she loved the Bulldogs.
After Robert's graduation, they lived in New Orleans and Natchez before moving to Memphis. It was in Natchez their precious baby Gail was born.
After moving to Memphis, they became active members of Mullins United Methodist Church. Jean is a past president of Mullins United Methodist Women. She was a longtime member of Shelby County Republican Women's Club and also served as President of that organization.
Robert and Jean enjoyed fishing all over the South. They enjoyed vacationing in Destin and Gulf Shores. This all came to a sudden end when Robert died of a sudden cardiac arrhythmia at the early age of 59.
A few years later, she married George Sibley. They had a happy life traveling to many countries. They visited their favorite city, Paris, 3 times. He was a wonderful Grandfather to their 3 grandchildren.
Jean often bragged that she had the two best husbands a wife could ever have. George died in 2012.
Jean is survived by her daughter, Dr. Gail Thurmond, and her children: Robert Gordon, Sara Gordon, and Lara Gordon (Katie Bradbury) and her former son-in-law, Richard Gordon. She is also survived by her stepdaughters and their children: Nancy Shelby (Scott), Leslie Albers (Steve), David Anderson and Betty Moore (Ron), Russ Cox (Pam), Lisa Brigham (Greg), Nicole Stevens (Chris).
The family will receive friends from 12:00 p.m. until her service begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Memorial Park Funeral Home, 5668 Poplar Ave., Memphis, TN.
