Jean Todd Phipps' Obituary
Jean Elizabeth Todd Phipps, 83, died Sunday, March 21, 2010 at Methodist North Hospital. A lifelong Memphian, Jean was born to Lorena and Graydon Todd, Sr. She graduated from Treadwell High School in 1944 and continued to attend reunions with her classmates throughout her life. Following an introduction by her older brother Graydon, Jean married Monzell Jay Phipps in February 1947. They shared a special 63 year marriage together. Mrs. Phipps enjoyed her 16 years as an Air Force Officer’s wife, making life-long friends, traveling and playing bridge. After working as an office manager for Dr. John J. Harris, Mrs. Phipps spent almost 25 years enjoying life with her husband, traveling to visit family and friends. She took great pride in her grandchildren and great grandson. Both Mr. and Mrs. Phipps were very devoted to their grandchildren, playing an active role in all their lives. She is survived by her husband Jay Phipps, her children, Pamela Phipps Bagwell and Bradley Jay Phipps both of Memphis, and 5 grandchildren, Leigh Sanland Bagwell of Smyrna, TN; Drury Jay Bagwell of Jackson, MI; Rebekah Jill Phipps, Connor Jay Phipps, and Savannah Lindley Phipps of Black Mountain, NC, and one great grandson, Graydon Drury Bagwell. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Jill Anne Phipps. A memorial service for Mrs. Phipps will be held at Memorial Park Funeral Home Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive friends beginning at 3:00. Private interment will be at National Cemetery. Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association, or a charity of the donor’s choice.
