Janine Elise Beebe McKay's Obituary
This obituary honors the life of Janine Elise Beebe McKay, 74, of Memphis, Tennessee – a cherished wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend who championed those she loved with all her heart. Jan passed away peacefully in Memphis on February 06, 2026, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer. She was an intelligent, capable, and well-read lady with an unassuming soul who was adept at showing others they were special to her. Never wanting to draw attention to herself, Jan was rather an enthusiastic supporter of those she cared about most.
Jan was born in Pontiac, Michigan on November 01, 1951, to Dr. Williard H. Beebe and Doris Natho Beebe. She was the youngest of five children and admired her siblings, Kathy, Clint, Karen, and Paul, throughout her life. Whenever they needed her support, she was there to provide it without hesitation.
After graduating from Belleville High School in 1969, Jan earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University. She went on to work in customer service for American Motors Corporation in Detroit. It was there that she met Gregory McKay of Dearborn Heights, MI. They married in 1979 in a simple backyard ceremony at her parents’ home. In marrying Greg, Jan was adopted into an unforeseen multitude of extended family and friends unlike anything she had ever imagined. Although her quiet nature was surely overwhelmed, she secretly relished in the merriment that this brought to her life. Among those who now mourn her passing are numerous friends from camping trips, family from Highland Games in Canada, and extended family and friends beyond her imagination.
During her almost forty-seven years of marriage to Greg, Jan had her own career for many years before shifting her focus to support him as an entrepreneur. Together they relocated from Michigan, to Atlanta, and then to Memphis where they grew a successful manufacturing business, Griffin Incorporated. However, Jan’s true calling was motherhood, and she made the commitment to raise her children at home. She and Greg had two daughters, Kelley Kinsland (Stephen) of Fort Collins, CO, and Casey Ford (Garet) of Piperton, TN. Jan was devoted to her girls throughout her life, and modeled for them how to be kind, independent, and value hard work. She was their biggest fan and an ardent supporter of everything that interested them. She managed schedules, helped with schoolwork, prepared home cooked meals, fostered their hobbies, took care of them when they were sick, shopped until she dropped more times than she could count, and provided her girls with a loving home to enjoy their childhood. Kelley and Casey’s best memories of their mom will forever be the numerous ways she made them feel loved and important throughout her life.
Yet, even more than motherhood, Jan’s greatest joy in life was being Nana to her four grandchildren- Stephen Jr. (15), Ellis (13), Abigail (11), and Silas (7). When Jan became a grandmother, her purpose became showing her grandkids that they were her special people. She helped care for their needs, hosted sleepovers, picked them up from school, attended all their events, spoiled them endlessly, and formed unique bonds with each of them. If you ever had the opportunity to sit for a while with Jan, you were sure to be shown a video of Stephen Jr. singing in a musical, learn about Ellis’ talent for golf, see a photo of Abby riding a horse, or hear about how smart Silas is in school. She was very proud of each of them for their unique talents and abilities. Jan’s love for and enjoyment of her grandchildren was the culmination of her life’s work. They will each remember their Nana as a warm, bright light in their childhood.
Finally, a celebration of Jan’s life cannot be complete without mentioning her immense love for dogs. It began with three Border Collies - Molly, Jessie, and Sallie - that she loved like her own children. Then came a multitude of rescue pups she welcomed into her life with open arms - Maggie, Gracie, Griffin, and Link. Her affection for dogs finally became full circle several years ago when she adopted one last friend, a Border Collie named Ellum, who was her most loyal companion. Jan will be laid to rest with the remains of each of her beloved dogs as this was her emphatic final request. Ellum will join her one day in the future, but Jan’s daughters believe she intentionally left Ellum behind - just for little while - because she knew that a Border Collie would be the best companion for Greg in her absence.
To all the family and friends who have known, loved, or cared for Jan, please join her family as they celebrate her life on March 14, 2026, in her home state of Michigan. Further details for the event will be forthcoming as soon as they are finalized. Jan’s family is grateful to have received a multitude of condolences and messages sharing special memories of her. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to an organization Jan loved - West TN Border Collie Rescue - in remembrance of her life and passion for dogs.
