Janice Harkess' Obituary
Janice Platt Harkess passed away on November 25 at the age of 87 years. She died peacefully in her sleep. During her last days she was surrounded by family and she left this world knowing that she was dearly loved. She was reunited in heaven with James W. Harkess, her husband of 52 years who preceded her in death in 2006. She grew up in the village of West Sand Lake, New York, went to nursing school at Russell Sage College, and became a head nurse at Albany Medical Center. There she met Dr. James Wilson Harkess of Edinburgh Scotland, whom she married in 1954. They settled in Louisville in 1967. She supported her husband in his role as Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Louisville and raised three children. She was a person who knew how to get things done, and always helped her friends tackle difficult jobs. She also knew how to take care of people. Every guest felt welcome in her home, and when family and friends were ill she knew what to do to make them feel more comfortable. She is survived by her children, Dr. John R. Harkess, Dr. James W. Harkess, Jane H. Bodine and their spouses, Leanna Harkess, Carol Harkess, and Ronald Bodine. She is also survived by her eight grandchildren. A memorial service for friends and family will be held at Second Presbyterian Church on Saturday, December 13th at 10am in the Chapel.
