Janice Smith Albertine's Obituary
On Wednesday, January 18, 2023 – almost two weeks after her 92nd birthday – Janice Smith Albertine passed away peacefully in her home. Janice was born to Mr. and Mrs. Palmer Smith, Jr. on January 6, 1931 in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she graduated from Metairie Park Country Day School in 1948. From there, she attended the University of Alabama before moving to Memphis, Tennessee and marrying James Gary Albertine, Sr. in 1951. Together they built their life in Memphis, where they raised their four children. Janice always enjoyed her weekly luncheons and playing tennis with friends, but never missed a good party. When Janice and her husband Gary were on the dance floor, the whole room would light up. Striking a fine balance, Janice also enjoyed the simple things in life like a piece of chocolate cake with a chilled Coca-Cola on a hot summer’s day while reminiscing about the good old days. She often recalled how happy people were at the end of World War II and reminded us how the greatest generation survived and ultimately thrived. It was at the Memphis College of Art where Janice discovered her true passion and received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1995. Her career in the arts flourished. Off the tennis court and dance floor, you would find Janice listening to jazz music or Billy Joel in her art studio painting or rummaging through art books looking for inspiration. Paintbrush in hand, she would point to a section on the canvas and ask her child or grandchild, who often frequented her studio, “What do you think if I add this here?” She listened so intently and cared for others well, was fiercely loyal, and always available and giving to those she loved. She was loved by so many. Janice will be remembered for her love of New Orleans, her contagious laugh, but most of all her deep love for her family. Janice is predeceased by her husband of 66 years, James Gary Albertine, Sr. She is survived by her daughter Leslie Goodwin (Steve), son Gary Albertine, Jr. (Anne), daughter Jan Boucek (Greg), son Palmer Albertine (Kathy), ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. A private graveside service followed by visitation for family and friends will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Young Life, Carpenter Art Garden, or a charitable organization of your choice.
