Janette "Jan" C. Russell's Obituary
Janette Clemons Russell, 76, passed away peacefully in her sleep after a short illness Monday morning with her family at her bedside. Ms. Russell was born in Finger, Tenn., and attended Frayser High School before moving to Thaxton, Miss., where she met her husband of 58 years, Moody “Russ” Russell. She often said that the two biggest joys in her life were her two children, Alicia and Greg Russell. She was also proud of earning a B.A. in history summa cum laude from the University of Memphis in 1995. At the University, she was a national honor society member, a Student Ambassador and served on numerous academic and social committees. Ms. Russell worked for several years in real estate and was later commissioned by the Shelby County Government to pen the book, The Shelby County Courthouse: Renovation and Restoration, 1980-1992. She was also a volunteer at the Magevney House, a historical residence in downtown Memphis, and later led historical documentation efforts at the Hunt Phelan House. Recently, Ms. Russell worked as a proofreader for The University of Memphis Magazine. She was a huge fan of the University of Memphis and New England Patriots football teams and was an avid nature enthusiast who loved to hike and camp. She is survived by her husband, Moody “Russ” Russell; daughter, Alicia Lynne Russell; and son, Greg Russell. She was preceded in death by her father, James Paul Clemons; mother, Agnes Clemons Peagler; brothers James Clemons and Jere Paul Clemons; and sister, Jean Clemons Steiff. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Feb. 17 from 5-8 p.m. with the service on Thursday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m. All services will be held at Memorial Park, 5668 Poplar Ave
