Janet Marie Singer's Obituary
Janet Marie Singer died on January 19, 2019 at the age of 92. Jan was an avid golfer at her home course, Chickasaw Country Club. She loved playing cards on Friday nights with her many friends. In addition to these hobbies, Jan pursued her passion for creating 3D fused glass such as her famous three legged vases.Jan started her art education at the Cleveland Art Institute and Case Western Reserve University in 1946. She received her BFA in painting at Memphis College of Art in 1976. She attended Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts and Penland School of Arts and Crafts in North Carolina. While she had a passion for 3D fused glass, she also worked with fused glass in a variety of 2D ways. Her 2D works included glass paintings, glass jewelry, and especially her acclaimed holiday glass star ornaments. Jan has shown her artwork internationally, nationally, and locally. Jan’s artwork has been featured in collections at the Memphis Brooks Museum, the Memphis College of Art, the Tennessee State Museum, and Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. Christian Brothers University has a permanent collection of her personal papers, her photographs, her artwork, and her personal art collection.Jan met her husband of 51 years, Ward Singer, during a bridge game in the student union of Case Western Reserve. Jan and Ward raised four children in Memphis, TN. Jan is survived by her son Richard Singer, her daughter Susan Houchins and husband Fred, her son Bill Singer and partner Bob McGarvey, and her youngest son Jim Singer and wife Maggie. Jan was a loving “Gramma” to five grandchildren: Rory Goodman and wife Chris, Jesse Houchins and wife Tara, Sara Houchins, Erin Singer McCombs and husband Joel, Brian Singer and wife Emily, and Katie Singer and husband Andrew. She has eight great-grandchildren: Rose, Mitchell, Caitlin, Andrew, Bella, Matthew, Carter, and Kinley. She will be remembered as a great golfer, card player, artist, mother, grandmother, and friend.Family and friends are invited to celebrate her life from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 13 at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Graveside services will follow at 12:30 p.m., in Memorial Park Cemetery.
