James L. Underhill's Obituary
James Lewis Underhill was born May 28, 1940 in Memphis, TN, the son of Lucy Wood Underhill and Luther C. Underhill. He died January 11, 2013 at Baptist Trinity Hospice House following a short illness. James earned a bachelor’s degree from Memphis State University and a master’s degree from the University of South Dakota. He taught with the Memphis City Schools for 30 years, teaching mathematics, computer skills, and speech and drama at Hillcrest, Northside, and Fairley High Schools. James served as a representative of the Memphis Education Association, and he was an active member of the Tennessee Education Association and the National Education Association. For 38 years, James shared his Hernando, MS home with his lifelong partner, Richard O’Neall Gatlin. James is also survived by two brothers, Richard E. Underhill of Proctor, AR and Thomas E. Underhill of Fort Smith, AR. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. James will be buried adjacent to his parents in Memorial Park.
