James Allison Pitcock's Obituary
James Allison Pitcock, M.D., 84, died on August 19, 2014, after a long illness. He was born on September 13, 1929 in Little Rock, AR. He was a graduate of Little Rock Central High School. In 1951, he earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with honors from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1954, he married Cynthia DeHaven, of Little Rock, and the following year, they both graduated—he earned an M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine; she earned a B.A. with honors, also from Washington University. Dr. Pitcock began his residency training at Vanderbilt University in surgery and the following year, he returned to Washington University School of medicine to achieve his specialty training in Pathology. He was obligated to serve two years in the armed services, so as a Captain, Dr. Pitcock co-directed Balcones Space Laboratory for the U.S. Air Force and the University of Texas. Dr. Pitcock and his family moved to Memphis, TN. When he joined the Pathology Department of Baptist Memorial Hospital, he achieved a dual-career of Clinical and Surgical Pathology, as well as research for which he earned an institutional reputation. For more than 20 years, Dr. Pitcock was also a member of the Campbell Orthopedic Clinic faculty, as Orthopedic Pathologist. He became head of Pathology at the University of Tennessee and Baptist Memorial Hospital until his retirement. Dr. Pitcock is survived by his wife Cynthia DeHaven Pitcock, Ph.D.; two children Allison Pitcock Fentress and James DeHaven Pitcock; and four grandchildren. The family will receive friends 5-7 p.m., Sunday, August 24 at Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Funeral services are incomplete at this time. Burial will be in St. Philip Episcopal Church Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery, 5668 Poplar Ave. Memphis, TN 38119, “Behind the Stone Wall.”
